Free radon test kits in Illinois

Illinois does not run a statewide giveaway. The state points people to low cost do it yourself kits sold in hardware stores, and notes that some local health departments have them too. That second option is the one most people miss. Departments vary, and some hand kits out free while others charge a few dollars, so it is worth one phone call before buying retail. The Illinois Radon Hotline on 800-325-1245 can tell you what is available near you. Illinois also licenses radon professionals, so if you would rather not test yourself there is a regulated list to hire from.
